Skype on a plane? Hook me up asap
Just a quick note to say that I will be 30,000 feet in the air when net@nite is scheduled to happen live online tonight (on vacation for the weekend with my family), so unless I stumble upon Skype on a plane (one can only dream!) Leo and I are off this Sunday. The good news is that we're back next Sunday the 1st for a special April Fool's Day show. I would tell you who's on, but you would never believe me...
For my fellow cyber-warriors (AKA Robert Medeiros*), my friends and I just started a Canadians for Net Neutrality* group on Facebook (*you need to log in) so if you get a chance sign up/speak up/join in (open to anyone). It's a spot to try to educate people about why fighting for net neutrality is a good thing. After all, Facebook isn't just for poking.

Thanks for the update on net@nite Amber, I hope you enjoy your time with your family. :-)

Having Skype on a plane is like the perfect dream, Amber. Other VoIP services should follow Skype's example, thinking of their customers first.

Amber, congrats on the facebook setup; I'm all signed up.
As for your skype dilemma, many Canadian planes have in-flight phones. Maybe call a skype-in number, and have the call connected that way by someone on the ground?

Hi Amber,
You can definitely Skype on a plane. Some airlines offer internet access in the air and I have called people and talked on skype when they air 30,000 feet in the air. It's quite amazing but it's true.

I used Skype quite a few times using "Connexion by Boeing" aboard Asian airlines (Singapore and Japan airlines were among them) and it worked pretty well.
The main issue was not with the connection itself but with the constant noise in the cabin, making it difficult to hear what the other person is saying.
Sadly, that service was discontinued at the end of 2006, probably because nobody used it except me. :) I don't remember seeing anyone else using the service in these flights ... some flight attendants were not even aware it existed!
I am not aware of any other service like "Connexion by Boeing" ...
