Today is a great day to go to Sweden
Five steps to my Swedish obsession...
1. My friend sent me a link to the Teddybears (Sthlm) song, Yours to Keep, Sunday afternoon (which I added to MySpace (I'm sick of saying my MySpace, it's obviously mine ;-). FYI - Teddybears are on this great list of top 50 vids for 2006.
2. Number 1 reminded me of a CNI story I did a few weeks ago about a super-slick Swedish tower; you can dial the building and change the colour of the lights, and then watch it all online.
3. Leo and I named our Sunday night podcast the Stockholm Syndrome after much chat about 23% Firefox penetration in Europe and very cool Scandinavian design.
4. After net@nite, I got this email invitation to Sweden...
Hi Amber! I have an offer you can't refuse! I listened to the latest episode of net@nite today and heard that you're interested in visiting Sweden. You can live for free in my apartment in Linköping with me and my girlfriend. If you don't mind washing some dishes now and then you can stay for how long you want. Dude, Opera Mini and Opera for the Nintendo DS was made in Linköping, how about that? Anyhoo, if you ever go to Sweden, don't forget to tell your Swedish listeners/viewers so there can be some kind of meet up. Keep up the good work! J. Lindström
P.S. My mother always compliment me for how good coffee I make and Sweden has the second highest coffee consumption per capita in the whole world... |
5. See the P.S. above.
I just had dinner with Leo Laporte, Merlin Mann, and Steve Gibson, so if all goes well I think I've convinced them that our imaginary tech tour called Geekapalooza 2007 should include a stop in Stockholm...hope they remember their commitment to the cause in the morning ;-).

Hi Amber,
the Oresund region is very tech oriented as well. It's the region around Malmo and Helsingborg in the bottom left corner of your map.
check it out if you are interested :)
Tim.

Sweden???!!! The land of wimps???
Just joking. Friendly let down among bretheren, but - just want to remind you that the Opera HQ is in Oslo and that Fast Search is there too... probably more but I am in biotech so what do I know...we'll find out more for you to learn... TraceTracker the worlds foremost food traceability software provider is here I recall...
Provided you drop in second half July/early August I can put you up, for a few days {sorry to be less generous than my Swedish brother, but the wife would go balistic if you park here for a week or two... but something could be arranged I am for sure..)
So - just let me know.

I agree about the my Myspace, it's like "I picked up the USA Today, today". We miss you on Call for Help, but it's great listening to you and Leo on net@nite. Your Inside the Net netcasts were what got me started at sites like; Instructables (where I've done a few projects), blogger and many others. Thanks and keep up your perky good work :)

You should definitely visit Stockholm... you will not be disappointed. I am American, but studied there for a year in school and then again for two semesters in college. The people (as you can already see from the warm offers you are receiving) are the kindest and most considerate in Europe. As an added benefit most of them can speak English better than you or I.
I suggest visiting during the summer months, especially if it is your first trip. In late June it will be light for almost all of the day (as opposed to right now when it is dark for all but 5 hours of the day). I try to get back there at least once a year.
There is a lot to see, but I like the music/beer/social scene in a place called Mosebacke Torg (http://www.mosebacke.se) at the top of Katarinahissen (a really big outdoor elevator) just south of Gamla Stan (the old town). Södra teatern at Mosebacke has live music most summer nights and the crowds are big, but fun. You will meet lots of people.
Now you have me all excited about my next visit... Thanks!

Just finished adjusting to the new net@nite podcast and wanted to comment that your audio has vastly improved. What change did you make on connecting with Leo? BTW ... I enjoy your video and audio links and tips. (ps ... tell Leo to scratch using the video clips in his audio only podcast ... it drive me crazy ... or maybe I'm just listening too hard? :-)

You're right Amber, Sweden sounds like it would be a pretty cool place to visit. I've always wanted to go there myself. Great music (though probably not the same music you're into). Check! Awesome scenery. Check! Hockey. Check! Nuff said
